New Zealand Students To Get Internship Chance With NASA

New Zealand tertiary students will be offered the chance to participate in NASA’s International Internships Programme, under an agreement between the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment and NASA.

“Through the programme, high-achieving students will have the opportunity to work in NASA’s best and most advanced research facilities, with access to expert mentors,” Economic Development Minister David Parker said.

“The experience could inspire someone to begin the journey to becoming an astronaut or to follow in the footsteps of great Kiwi scientist Sir William Pickering who led the successful effort to put the first US satellite in orbit.

“We thank the US for making this opportunity available to some of our best students.

“We hope this will galvanize them to think about how their skills could be applied in the space industry. That could be in areas such as Earth observation, data science, astrobiology or robotics,” David Parker said.

“Giving our future innovators, entrepreneurs and scientists opportunities to get a head-start in space-related careers will play a vital role in developing a thriving domestic industry.”

“It also strengthens New Zealand’s connection with global space networks and raises New Zealand’s profile as a location for space activities.

“New Zealand is well-positioned to become a hub for new space activities with its highly-skilled workforce and expertise in physics, energy, engineering and computer science research.”

The Agreement is accompanied by a new scholarship from the New Zealand Space Agency, which sits within the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment.

“The New Zealand Space Scholarship will be available to up to four successful applicants to cover the cost of participation, airfares, accommodation, and other associated expenses,” David Parker said.

U.S. Ambassador Scott Brown joined David Parker in welcoming the internship announcement.

“I’m very excited that New Zealand will be able to send their most promising students to work with leading NASA researchers. Working on the U.S.-New Zealand relationship is one of the best jobs in the universe, and this Agreement shows why.

“The NASA International Internship Programme lets us boldly go even further, giving Americans and Kiwis the chance to foster innovation, develop modern solutions to modern challenges, and advance scientific breakthroughs. The future of the U.S.-New Zealand partnership is, in fact, the future – and this agreement represents one giant leap in our extensive scientific cooperation – from Antarctic research to investments in health, and onwards to the final frontier,” Ambassador Brown said.

The New Zealand Space Agency will accept applications from 10 September and intends to provide NASA with student nominations for the June 2019 internship session.

Samsung Bluetooth VR Headset To Launch Soon

After the success of the previous virtual reality headset, Samsung is preparing to unveil a new VR headset that will be Bluetooth-enabled. The upcoming models have made an appearance on a Bluetooth certification website with similar numbers — XE800ZBA and XQ800ZBA. Apart from this, the listing doesn’t reveal much but it does indicate that Samsung will be launching two versions of the headset.

Previously, XE800ZBA made an appearance on FCC and some of the specifications had been detailed. A report by Variety states that the new headset goes by the model name HMD Odessey+ and it is largely based off the original Odessey headset that was launched last October. This headset is believed to run on the Microsoft Mixed Reality software and will make use of inside-out positional tracking “which allows users to lean into VR experiences without the need for any external tracking hardware.”

The Odessey+ will include dual 3.5-inch screens that feature a resolution of 1440 x 1600 pixels per eye. It will also have integrated audio from AKG. The sensor found here will include a WMR camera, IPD sensor, G-sensor, gyroscope and proximity sensor. Connectivity options are said to be HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth. The Odessey+ will also feature a dual array mic.

The report adds that the specifications have also mentioned a wider eye box and a redesigned nose part that will aim to reduce fogging of the lenses.

Since it has already popped up on the FCC and at a Bluetooth certification website, the launch should be imminent and we expect it to be unveiled at IFA Berlin 2018.

8 Lane Expressway to connect Delhi and Mumbai, Gadkari announces

Addressing the media at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport, Shipping and Highways announced that Delhi and Mumbai will be connected by an 8 lane Expressway in three years time. He added that The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will commence the construction of the proposed Expressway by December.

The expressway, to be built at a cost of about Rs 1 lakh crore, will connect India’s two most backward districts, Mewat (Haryana) and Dahod (Gujarat). “Commuters using the expressway would be able to reach Delhi or Mumbai within 12 hours, from the 24 hours taken at present” Said Gadkari.

The expressway will develop the hinterland in Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh and foster growth in these regions. As the expressway will pass through unexplored regions, land acquisition cost will also be reduced. “We are sure to start work on the expressway before December 10,” Gadkari said. The first tender for the project worth Rs 44,000 crore between Mumbai and Vadodara has been floated. Gadkari said the second tender for the stretch between Delhi-Amritsar was floated two days ago. “We will float the second tender for the highway soon. As the highway will connect to JNPT, it will help goods transporters to commute faster between the two cities.”

The expressway is expected to begin from Gurugram on the Delhi outskirts and run parallel to the existing highway up to Jaipur, from where it will turn eastwards to Rajasthan’s Alwar and Ratlam in western Madhya Pradesh and then move westwards to Baroda.

BJP’s New Target For 2018 Lok Sabha Elections Is South

Preparing for the Lok Sabha elections, the ‘theatre of war’ for the BJP shifts to three electorally significant states down south where the Congress and its allies mopped up majority of seats to win two consecutive General Elections beginning 2004.

Political alignments and adjustments in 82 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu (1 in Puducherry) are being fine-tuned by both UPA and NDA to muster numbers.Congress and its allies, with a strike rate close to 90%, won more than 70 seats on both occasions in these four states in 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha polls. This tally plummeted to a mere two in 2014 elections. Of all these states, developments in Tamil Nadu are being watched very closely by both the BJP and the Congress. No one really knows how the state’s polity would crystalise after the deaths of M Karunanidhi and J Jayalalithaa. Every player is making precocious moves to test waters.

In an interaction with the media earlier this month, a top Congress leader was reasonably sure of the DMK contesting the next Lok Sabha elections under the UPA umbrella. The very next week, the DMK extended an invite for Karunanidhi’s memorial service to be held this month-end to BJP president Amit Shah. Initial reports suggested that Shah would attend. It now appears the BJP will instead send a senior party leader to the ceremony. The Congress is likely to be represented by old TN hand Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Amit Shah, during his last trip to Tamil Nadu, had categorically said his party will have pre-poll alliance in the state. But with whom?Choice of allies in Tamil Nadu in 2004 and 2009 sent the BJP on a decade-long exile out of the Delhi Durbar. This time around, the party is treading with extreme caution.

In Andhra Pradesh, with 25 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP is a minor player, as is the Congress party. The elections in the state would see a direct contest between the TDP and the YSRCP. Attempting to consolidate on Dalit and minority votes, Jagan Mohan Reddy cannot be seen to be having any truck with the BJP. Having burnt its bridges with Naidu, in the larger national context, it suits the BJP if the TDP is contained in the state. In adjoining Telangana, the Congress is the main opposition to the ruling TRS. K Chandrashekhar Rao’s loss would be Congress’ gain. And here again, it suits the BJP if TRS maintains its dominance over state politics.

By accepting support from the TRS and the BJD in recent Rajya Sahba deputy chairman elections, the BJP is no more a challenger to either KCR or Naveen Patnaik. It has conceded opposition space to the Congress. It’s a tactical move to contain the Congress where BJP feels it is not in a position to make substantive inroads and convert votes into seats.

In the last three years as it prepared for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had sought to consolidate its position in the east and along the ‘Coromandal Coast’ to make for any losses in areas it has peaked in the last elections. Re-assessing the current political situation, in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha, the BJP seems to have made up its mind to survive and fight another day. Political situation in Tamil Nadu will unfold in the months ahead.West Bengal, with 42 seats, is where the BJP will be pinning its hopes now to add to its tally

Verdict On Twin Bomb Blast Of Hyderabad Today

Eleven years after twin bomb blasts at Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park in Hyderabad claimed 42 lives and left over 50 injured, a court in Hyderabad will deliver the judgement in the case today.

The trial against four accused in the case was shifted to a court hall located in the premises of Cherlapalli Central Prison in Hyderabad from a court located in Nampally court complex in June this year.

Kapoor Family To Sell RK Studios

The Kapoor family has collectively decided to sell the sprawling landmark RK Studio. Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan says she has fond memories of the studio, built by her late legendary grandfather Raj Kapoor. According to reports,Kareena Kapoor said: “I don’t know how far what is actually happening. In fact, I have been quite under the weather and I haven’t even met my father in the last four or five days… But of course, we have all grown up walking around in those corridors.”

“I think it’s probably something that the family has decided, so it’s upto my fathers, his brothers and up to them… If that’s what they have decided, so be it,” added the actress on the sidelines of the Lakme Fashion Week, where she was the showstopper for the finale show. The Kapoor family has taken the tough decision of selling the two-acre RK Studio 70 years after it was established as it was not economically viable to rebuild it after it was gutted down in a fire last year.

Rishi Kapoor, in an interview to Mumbai Mirror on behalf of the family, said they were initially juggling with the idea of renovating the place with state-of-the-art technology, but the investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. He called it a “level headed decision”.In September last year, a major fire broke out on the sets of a dance reality show, leaving a section of the studio gutted.

R.K. Studio, the headquarters of the film production company R.K. Films, was founded and named after the Great Showman, Raj Kapoor, in 1948.Its inaugural banner film Aag that year crashed at the box office, but the next year proved to be a good omen when its production Barsaat (1949), starring Raj Kapoor-Nargis was a superhit.

In fact, the company’s logo was designed to reflect the poster of a scene from Barsaat and after that, the studio never looked back.It had a string of successful black-and-white releases like Awaara (1951), Boot Polish (1954), Shri 420 (1955) and Jaagte Raho (1956).

Later, the studio was the venue for several other big-ticket films like Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hain (1960), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Bobby (1973), the debut film for Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Prem Rog (1982), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), which was the founder-actor’s last film before his death in June 1988.
