The members of Trump’s Cabinet have various ideologies that are hidden behind the idea of ‘America First’. Some potential nominees are driven by a desire for revenge, others aim to stabilize markets, and a third group is focused on reducing both staff and budgets, despite facing challenges in doing so.

Throughout his career at The Times, David E. Sanger has reported on five different American presidents for over forty years.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s last-minute selections for his cabinet and other positions were said to create a cohesive and loyal administration focused on the "Make America Great Again" agenda. However, a closer look reveals that there are actually three separate groups with different beliefs and a variety of ideologies, which have been kept under control to successfully pass through the confirmation process.

A group of individuals seeking revenge, including potential candidates, are leading a team with orders to dismantle the Justice Department, intelligence agencies, and Defense Department. They are targeting the so-called deep state and individuals involved in prosecuting Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump has put together a team to maintain market stability, with the possibility of Scott Bessent leading it. Bessent, a billionaire from Wall Street, is rumored to be Mr. Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. While he supports deregulation and lower taxes, he may also work to prevent extreme measures from Trump, such as imposing tariffs that could cause inflation and impact the stock market surge following the election.

A team led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy aims to significantly reduce the size of the government. Their goal is to cut at least $2 trillion from the annual federal budget, which is more than the total cost of salaries for all federal employees. It is worth noting that the total federal budget for the 2024 fiscal year was $6.75 trillion.

One of the main uncertainties of the new administration is how these missions will come together or clash with each other.

Having a variety of different beliefs and opinions is typically viewed as a positive aspect of presidential cabinets. However, what is surprising about President Trump’s recent appointments is that some of them have diverse backgrounds and perspectives that may not align perfectly with his "Make America Great Again" slogan or his personal loyalty. It is unlikely that a few of his choices would fit in well at a Trump rally.
