Trump’s Cabinet: Various ideologies hidden under the guise of ‘America First’

Different groups of potential nominees have different focuses – one on seeking revenge, another on stabilizing markets, and a third on making drastic cuts to both staff and budgets, potentially without much hope for success.

Written by David E. Sanger.

For over forty years, David E. Sanger has reported on five different American presidents for The New York Times.

President-elect Donald J. Trump has completed his selection of cabinet members and other appointees, creating what his team has characterized as a cohesive and loyal administration focused on the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) agenda. However, beneath the surface, there are evident divisions between at least three different groups with varying ideologies, although they are working together to navigate the confirmation process.

A group of individuals seeking revenge, headed by potential candidates, has been tasked with dismantling the Justice Department, intelligence agencies, and Defense Department. Their goal is to target the deep state and those involved in prosecuting Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump has assembled a team to reassure the markets, with Scott Bessent, a billionaire from Wall Street, being considered as the possible leader. Although Mr. Bessent supports the ideas of deregulation and lower taxes as part of the MAGA agenda, he may also work to prevent Mr. Trump’s more radical proposals, such as imposing tariffs that could cause inflation and disrupt the stock market’s post-election growth.

A team led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy is working to reduce the size of the government. Their goal is very ambitious, aiming to cut at least $2 trillion from the annual federal budget. This amount is greater than the total salaries of all federal employees. In the 2024 fiscal year, the total federal budget was $6.75 trillion.

One of the major uncertainties facing the new administration is how these missions will align and potentially conflict with each other.

Having a variety of different beliefs and opinions is typically viewed as a positive aspect of presidential cabinets. However, what stands out about President Trump’s recent cabinet selections is the diverse backgrounds and perspectives that may not align with his "Make America Great Again" mantra or loyalty to him personally. Some of his picks may not fit in well at a Trump rally.
