Writing from the capital

The team of President-elect Donald J. Trump has agreed to a transition deal with the White House, enabling them to start receiving official briefings from current staff in various government agencies. This announcement was made by Mr. Trump’s chief of staff on Tuesday evening.

However, the team of Mr. Trump has not agreed to a deal with the Justice Department to permit the F.B.I. to conduct security clearances for members of the transition team. As a result, officials from the Biden administration will not be able to share confidential information with a number of Mr. Trump’s transition advisors.

The Trump administration is declining to sign a typical agreement with the General Services Administration that typically offers secure office space, government email accounts, and additional support. Officials in the White House stated that this decision would complicate the sharing of information with Mr. Trump’s team in the coming two months.

In the past few years, new presidents have made agreements with the previous presidents to make the transfer of power easier. This is done to make sure that the new administration is prepared to start on January 20th and that its members follow basic ethical guidelines.

Susie Wiles, who is going to be the main staff member for Mr. Trump at the White House, mentioned in a statement that the president-elect has instructed his team to sign the usual memorandum of understanding. This is to start the sharing of information between the current and future administrations.

In a statement, Ms. Wiles mentioned that this agreement will enable our chosen cabinet nominees to start important preparations, such as sending teams to each department and agency, and ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
