Over the course of more than a year, the journalists have published multiple articles about discussions to reach a cease-fire agreement for the conflict in Gaza.
Hamas has held the belief that a larger conflict in the Middle East would result in a successful outcome for the organization in its ongoing conflict with Israel.
However, the agreement to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has undermined the strategy of Hamas, as it may result in the loss of their key ally in the battle, as stated by American officials.
This deal marks progress for the Biden administration, as they work to prevent a larger conflict and push Hamas to negotiate with Israel and free the hostages they are holding in Gaza.
Prior to the announcement of the cease-fire in Lebanon, Palestinian and U.S. officials indicated their belief that Hamas’s political leaders were open to negotiating and moving away from the tactics established by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces recently.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main goal was to try and defeat Israel by engaging in a full-scale war with Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, as long as this strategy seemed feasible, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any attempts at a cease-fire agreement.
