Hamas is finding itself in a challenging position as its key ally, Israel, is focused on its offensive against Hezbollah and efforts to establish a cease-fire in Lebanon. This has resulted in Hamas becoming more isolated.

Written by Julian E. Barnes, Adam Rasgon, Aaron Boxerman, and Ronen Bergman.

The journalists have been writing many stories about peace talks for the Gaza conflict for over a year.

Hamas has always thought that a larger conflict in the Middle East would be beneficial in achieving success against Israel in their ongoing conflict.

The agreement to stop the violence between Israel and Hezbollah has undermined the strategy of Hamas, as it could mean losing their main supporter in the conflict, as per U.S. officials.

The Biden administration has made progress with this agreement, as they have been working to prevent a larger conflict and put pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and release the hostages they are holding in Gaza.

Prior to the announcement of the ceasefire in Lebanon, Palestinian and American officials indicated that they believed Hamas’s political leadership was willing to negotiate and move away from the tactics established by their deceased leader Yahya Sinwar.

Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main goal was to defeat Israel by escalating the conflict into a full-scale war involving Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar was determined to prevent any potential cease-fire agreements as long as there was a possibility of achieving his strategy.
