The agreement to halt the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has jeopardized Hamas’s alliance with Hezbollah, which was seen as a crucial support in the fight, as per U.S. officials.
The Biden administration has made progress with an agreement aimed at limiting the larger conflict and urging Hamas to negotiate with Israel and free the hostages they are holding in Gaza.
Prior to the announcement of the Lebanese cease-fire on Tuesday, Palestinian and U.S. officials indicated that they thought Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the strategy set by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces recently.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel in October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar shifted his focus towards defeating the country by escalating the conflict into a full-scale war involving Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar was determined to prevent any possibility of a cease-fire as long as his strategy seemed feasible.
