For a long time, Hamas has held the belief that a larger conflict in the Middle East would give them an advantage in their ongoing conflict with Israel.
The agreement to stop the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has jeopardized Hamas’s support network, as US officials believe it could remove their key ally from the battle.
The Biden administration has made progress with an agreement aimed at managing the ongoing conflict and putting pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and release the captives they are holding in Gaza.
Prior to the announcement of the cease-fire in Lebanon, Palestinian and U.S. officials anticipated that Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the tactics established by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces the month before.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s priority was to defeat Israel by escalating the conflict to involve Hezbollah and Iran in a full-scale war. According to U.S. officials, as long as this strategy seemed viable, Mr. Sinwar would oppose any attempts to negotiate a cease-fire.
