For over a year, the journalists have published many articles about discussions to achieve a cease-fire during the conflict in Gaza.
Hamas has held the belief for a while that a larger conflict in the Middle East would give them an advantage in their ongoing conflict with Israel.
The agreement to halt the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has disrupted the strategy that Hamas relies on, as it could mean losing their main supporter in the battle. This is according to officials from the United States.
This agreement marks progress for the Biden administration, as they have been working to prevent a larger conflict and put pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and free the hostages they are holding in Gaza.
Prior to the declaration of the Lebanese cease-fire, Palestinian and American authorities expressed their belief that Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the tactics set by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces the previous month.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main focus was to defeat Israel by provoking a full-scale war involving Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any cease-fire agreements as long as this strategy seemed viable.
