Prior to the announcement of the cease-fire in Lebanon, Palestinian and American officials expressed their belief that Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the tactics established by their late leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces recently.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main goal was to defeat the country by escalating the conflict into a full-scale war involving Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any attempts at a cease-fire as long as this strategy seemed viable.
