Hamas is finding itself in a difficult position as its main supporter, Israel, is now focused on fighting Hezbollah and reaching a cease-fire in Lebanon. This has led to Hamas being left on its own and facing increased isolation.

The reporters have been writing many stories about discussions to achieve a cease-fire in the Gaza war for over a year.

Hamas has maintained the belief that escalating conflict in the Middle East would be advantageous for them in their ongoing conflict with Israel.

The agreement to stop the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has jeopardized Hamas’s support system, potentially weakening their position in the fight. This was noted by U.S. officials.

The Biden administration has made progress with an agreement aimed at stopping the ongoing conflict and putting pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and free the hostages they are holding in Gaza.

Prior to the announcement of the Lebanese cease-fire, both Palestinian and U.S. officials indicated that they thought Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the tactics set by their leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was recently killed by Israeli forces.

Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main goal was to defeat Israel by involving it in a large-scale conflict with Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, as long as this strategy seemed feasible, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any attempts at a ceasefire agreement.
