Hamas is finding itself in a challenging position as its key ally, Israel, has shifted its focus towards Hezbollah. The recent ceasefire in Lebanon has further isolated Hamas on the international stage.

Reporters have been writing multiple stories about discussions for a cease-fire in the Gaza conflict for over a year.

Hamas has held the belief that a larger conflict in the Middle East would increase their chances of achieving success in their battle against Israel.

The agreement to halt the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has jeopardized Hamas’s alliance with the Lebanese group, potentially weakening their support in the fighting, as stated by U.S. officials.

The Biden administration has taken a positive step by reaching an agreement to contain the conflict and put pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and release the hostages in Gaza.

Prior to the Lebanese cease-fire being declared on Tuesday, Palestinian and American officials expressed their belief that Hamas’s political leadership was prepared to negotiate and move away from the tactics set by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces the previous month.

Following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main goal was to defeat Israel by engaging in a full-scale war with Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any cease-fire agreement as long as this strategy seemed viable.
