Over the course of over a year, the journalists have published multiple articles covering the discussions and attempts at reaching a cease-fire agreement for the conflict in Gaza.
Hamas has always thought that a larger conflict in the Middle East would be beneficial for achieving success in its ongoing conflict with Israel.
The agreement to halt the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has disrupted Hamas’s plans, as their key ally in the conflict may no longer be involved in the fighting, as stated by U.S. officials.
This deal marks progress for the Biden administration, as they work to manage the conflict and put pressure on Hamas to negotiate with Israel and free the hostages they are holding in Gaza.
Prior to the announcement of the Lebanese cease-fire, Palestinian and U.S. officials had a belief that Hamas’s political leaders were willing to negotiate and move away from the strategy set by their deceased leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces a month prior.
Following an attack by Hamas on Israel in October 7, 2023, Mr. Sinwar’s main objective was to defeat Israel by involving it in a large-scale conflict with Hezbollah and Iran. According to U.S. officials, Mr. Sinwar would prevent any potential cease-fire agreement as long as this strategy seemed viable.
