Trudeau is in a position of vulnerability as he seeks to gather support for standing against Trump’s proposed tariffs. A number of Trudeau’s political rivals were just as harsh in their criticism of him as they were of the incoming president’s plan, which could have negative consequences for Canada’s economy.

In response to concerns about the negative impact on Canada if President-elect Donald J. Trump follows through on his plan to impose significant tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to meet with all provincial and territorial leaders to discuss a unified political strategy.

He emphasized the importance of everyone working together on this issue during a press conference in Ottawa. He highlighted the effectiveness of the Team Canada approach.

However, Mr. Trudeau may struggle to gather a cohesive response like he did under the previous Trump administration. Many of the provincial leaders are from opposing political parties, his Liberal federal government is not receiving strong support in polls, and he is at risk in the upcoming federal election, which is required to take place within the next year.

After Mr. Trump made his announcement, some provincial leaders criticized Mr. Trudeau just as strongly as they criticized Mr. Trump’s plan.

François Legault, the premier of Quebec, expressed agreement with the concerns raised by Donald Trump and stated that he would insist on Quebec being included in any trade talks with the United States. He, along with other political rivals of Prime Minister Trudeau, criticized Trudeau for not taking the tariff threat seriously and warned of potential job losses in Quebec and across Canada.

Doug Ford, a member of the Progressive Conservative party and the leader of Ontario, the most heavily populated province in Canada known for its manufacturing industry, expressed feeling deeply betrayed by Mr. Trump’s announcement, likening it to a painful betrayal by a close family member.
