Vito, a young pug, stood on the blue carpet as he was surrounded by dozens of people clapping and cheering for him. It was clear that he had just been awarded best in show at the National Dog Show, but it was uncertain if he truly understood the significance of his accomplishment.
Michael Scott, who is in charge of Vito, mentioned to NBC’s Mary Carillo after the event that Vito seems quite pleased with himself and possibly aware of his success.
Vito, a pug, won the National Dog Show by beating out almost 2,000 other dogs from over 200 breeds. This event took place in Oaks, Pennsylvania, and was aired on NBC after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Why is Vito considered unique or extraordinary?
Mr. Scott complimented Vito’s attractive appearance, mentioning that he has a well-proportioned body and moves gracefully.
Carolyn Koch from Chapel Hill, North Carolina is the owner of Vito, a 2-year-old dog. She received a cash prize and the opportunity to boast about her dog during their walks in the future.
Prior to winning the top prize at the competition, Vito was successful in the toy group category, which consists of dog breeds that the American Kennel Club describes as small in size but big in personality.
Vito is experiencing a streak of success. He recently won the best of breed titles at both the American Kennel Club National Show in 2023 and the Westminster Dog Show earlier this year. He competed under the name GCHG CH Andi in Cahoots. This is not the first time that his handler, Mr. Scott, has experienced such success. In 2008, he handled a Pointer dog named Holly, who won the National Dog Show.
In the final competition of the National Dog Show, Vito confidently walked on the blue carpet, appearing calm and comfortable, unaffected by the presence of television cameras, bright lights, and the audience cheering for him.
According to George Milutinovich, who was one of the judges choosing Vito from a strong group of dogs, he stated that Vito embodies all the characteristics that a pug should have.
Mr. Milutinovich described pugs as having a big personality in a small body. He said that just looking at a pug can make you smile.
Verde, a Welsh terrier, won second place, also known as reserve best in show.
Vito and Verde participated in a competition for the best in show title, facing off against other dogs such as Houston the clumber spaniel, Monty the giant schnauzer, the Zit the Ibizan hound, Rupert the Berger Picard, and J.J. the Lhasa Apso.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia has been hosting dog shows since 1879 and now presents a competition sponsored by Purina. The event first aired on television in 2002 and has since seen around 30,000 dogs participating. The decision to broadcast the competition, which attracts approximately 20 million viewers, was influenced by the 2000 film "Best in Show," a humorous take on the competitive dog show scene.
