Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts for Thanksgiving. They gave pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket, and also called members of the armed services. This is a tradition the family started in 1975 and has continued ever since.

During a rainy day on the island, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station and interacted with the officers on duty. He was seen smiling and exchanging baseball caps with them while guiding his grandson Beau through the building. Residents mostly stayed indoors during the rainstorm.

The president spent some time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic stories, and be mindful of the news they consume.

When asked about recent public opinion surveys showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this may be due to fewer people relying on traditional news sources and the negative outlook portrayed on television.

He suggested there is a reason for that, pointing out that when you watch TV, most of the time it’s filled with negative news.

Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president also acknowledged the challenges that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face. He suggested that Congress could push Mr. Trump to make adjustments to his plans and expressed some disagreement with certain ideas put forth by his successor.
