Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and first lady of the United States went around Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving visits. They gave pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, and also spoke with members of the military. This is a tradition that the family has been following since 1975.
On Thursday, when heavy rains covered the island, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station and interacted with the officers on duty. He seemed happy as he greeted them, exchanged baseball caps, and walked around with his grandson Beau. Many residents stayed indoors during the rainy weather.
The president spent a significant amount of time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values and not get caught up in pessimistic stories. He emphasized the importance of being mindful of where they get their news from.
After observing recent polls showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s trajectory, Mr. Biden suggested that this may be due to fewer people relying on traditional news sources and the negative outlook presented on television.
He suggested that the reason for that may be because when you watch TV, there’s not much positive news being reported.
While he urged Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president also acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face obstacles in the future. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and subtly expressed disapproval of some of his successor’s recent proposals.
