The women’s volleyball team at San Jose State University, which has sparked a national discussion on the participation of transgender women in women’s sports, reached the conference championship without competing in any games during the tournament.
Following a break in the competition, the team was getting ready to compete in a semifinal game in the Mountain West Conference tournament set for Friday. However, Boise State University declined to play against the Spartans for the third time due to the presence of a transgender player on the team.
Following their victory over Utah State University, Boise State’s players celebrated their qualification for the semifinals in Las Vegas by cheering, hugging, and gathering in a huddle to talk quietly before cheering once more.
After some time had passed, Boise State issued a statement expressing that they had made a difficult choice to withdraw from the 2024 Mountain West Volleyball Championship tournament. Despite facing setbacks, the team still managed to secure a spot in the tournament and even won against Utah State in the first round. The team believes that they should not have to give up this opportunity while improvements are made to the system to better serve all athletes.
This year, a Mountain West team has canceled a match against San Jose State for the seventh time due to protests against a transgender player. The player declined an interview request through a university spokesperson. Boise State, one of five teams to forfeit games against the Spartans this season, also forfeited two regular season games against them.
The choice made by Boise State to forfeit their chance at the final game has brought more focus to a controversial topic in American society: the inclusion of transgender women on women’s sports teams.
