Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Thursday morning, the president and first lady visited Massachusetts to carry out their usual Thanksgiving tradition. They gave pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket, and also reached out to members of the armed services. This tradition has been ongoing since 1975 for the family.

During a rainy day on Thursday, many people stayed indoors, but President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station where he greeted and interacted with the officers on duty. He was seen smiling and walking hand in hand with his grandson Beau through the station.

The president thought deeply about the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic stories, and be mindful of the news they consume.

Mr. Biden commented on recent surveys that show most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, attributing this concern to a decrease in viewership for traditional news sources and negative assessments on television.

He suggested that the reason for that could be attributed to the lack of positive news on television.

The president remained hopeful and encouraged Americans to stay positive despite challenges, but he also acknowledged potential obstacles for President-elect Donald J. Trump. He suggested that Congress may push for some changes to Mr. Trump’s plans and expressed mild criticism towards some of his successor’s recent proposals.
