Writing from the town of Nantucket, located in Massachusetts
On Thanksgiving morning, the president and first lady visited Massachusetts as part of their usual tradition. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, and also called members of the armed services. This tradition has been ongoing since 1975 for their family.
During a rainy day on Thursday, many people stayed indoors on the island. However, President Biden was seen happily visiting the Nantucket fire station. He greeted and exchanged baseball caps with the officers on duty, all while showing his grandson Beau around the building.
The president thought deeply about the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic viewpoints, and be mindful of the news they consume.
Mr. Biden discussed recent public opinion surveys that revealed many Americans are worried about the country’s direction. He thinks this is due to fewer people watching traditional news sources and negative assessments on TV.
"I believe there is a reason for that," he stated. "When you watch TV, you are often exposed to a lack of positive news."
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He suggested that Congress may push for modifications to some of Mr. Trump’s plans, and also expressed some mild criticism towards his successor’s recent ideas.
