Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and first lady of the United States visited Massachusetts as they usually do on Thanksgiving. They brought pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket and also reached out to members of the armed services. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.
During a rainy day, President Biden visited a fire station on Nantucket Island, interacting with officers and exchanging baseball caps with them. He also walked with his grandson Beau through the fire station, smiling and greeting everyone.
The president spent a lot of time thinking about the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values, avoid overly pessimistic stories, and be mindful of where they get their news from.
After observing recent public opinion surveys showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this could be due to a decrease in viewership of traditional news sources and negative assessments on television.
He suggested that the reason for that might be the lack of positive news on television.
Despite encouraging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He suggested that Congress may require Trump to adjust some of his plans and also made subtle criticisms of some of Trump’s recent ideas.
