Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Thursday morning, the president and first lady visited Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, while also reaching out to members of the armed services. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.

During a rainy day on the island, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station and interacted with the officers on duty, exchanging baseball caps and shaking hands. He also brought his grandson Beau along with him as they walked through the hall.

The president thought carefully about the current political atmosphere in the United States and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid consuming overly negative information, and be mindful of the news they consume.

After looking at recent polls showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this might be due to fewer people relying on traditional news sources and the negative outlook often seen on television.

He believed there was a reason for that, mentioning that when you watch TV, you are often exposed to a lot of negative news.

The president expressed hope for Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, but also acknowledged potential challenges for President-elect Donald J. Trump. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans, and offered mild criticism of his successor’s recent proposals.
