A Republican senator is preventing the advancement of Lt. Gen. Christopher T. Donahue, who led U.S. troops during the end of the Afghanistan withdrawal. This action may signal the beginning of a conflict between the Trump administration and military leaders in the country.

Senator Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Republican party from Oklahoma, delayed General Donahue’s promotion to the rank of four-star general after his nomination was submitted to the Armed Services Committee.

On Monday, a representative from the Pentagon named Sabrina Singh informed the press that the Defense Department had knowledge of the delay.

General Donahue, a highly experienced and decorated military leader, was the final American service member to leave Afghanistan when the Taliban gained control on August 31, 2021. He has served in multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq as a former Delta Force commander, Army Ranger, and paratrooper. Recently, he was chosen to lead the U.S. Army’s Europe Command as the conflict in Ukraine continues into its fourth year.

General Donahue is often considered a strong contender for the position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is the highest-ranking position in the military.
