The new health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has risen to a position of influence despite struggling with addiction and trauma throughout his life. His career has also been marked by connections to conspiracy theories.

Those who know Robert F. Kennedy Jr. well believe that his decisions are motivated by a desire to honor the memory of his father, who was tragically killed during his presidential campaign in 1968.

In September 1983, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. became sick during a flight to Rapid City, S.D. The pilot called ahead for medical assistance. Because of his well-known name, Mr. Kennedy, who was 29 years old and had just graduated from law school, was brought to a special room at the airport. It was there that investigators discovered heroin in his luggage.

Mr. Kennedy admitted that he became addicted to heroin during his teenage years, while trying to deal with his father’s assassination. After the airplane incident, he voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation facility in New Jersey. He claims to have stayed clean since then.

Currently, Mr. Kennedy has been chosen by President-elect Donald J. Trump to serve as the health secretary. This nomination came after a unique presidential campaign where he portrayed his life as a story of redemption. He shared with a conservative Christian radio host that as a young man struggling with addiction and personal issues, he had a "spiritual awakening" and realized he needed to make a profound change in his life.

Despite Mr. Kennedy’s initial journey towards sobriety, it was not the end of his struggles with personal demons and harmful tendencies. By looking into his life through interviews, court documents, and his own words, it becomes clear that he has a pattern of moving between extremes. This includes past drug addiction, uncontrollable sexual behavior, and immersion in conspiracy theories, all while being in the public eye.

In his middle years, Mr. Kennedy gained recognition for his work as an environmental lawyer, taking on corporations that polluted the environment, working to clean up rivers, and advocating for the protection of New York’s drinking water. However, he also had a pattern of engaging in multiple affairs and keeping a journal detailing his encounters. He would give numerical ratings to the women he was involved with, all while criticizing himself for his lack of self-control.

According to interviews with individuals who were familiar with the couple, his unfaithfulness played a role in the end of his second marriage. A previous nanny who worked for his family during that period has also claimed that Mr. Kennedy made unwanted sexual advances towards her and touched her inappropriately without her permission.
