Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, as well as made phone calls to members of the military. This tradition has been ongoing since 1975 for their family.
During a rainy day on the island, many people stayed indoors while President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station. He greeted the officers on duty, exchanged baseball caps, and walked through the station with his grandson Beau, all while smiling.
The president spent a significant amount of time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging citizens to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic viewpoints, and be mindful of the news they consume.
After reviewing recent public opinion surveys showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this may be due to a decrease in viewership for traditional news sources and overly negative assessments on television.
He suggested that the reason for this may be because when you watch television, there is often a lack of positive news being broadcasted.
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president also acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges ahead. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also mentioned some concerns about his successor’s recent proposals.
