Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts to distribute pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket. They also called members of the armed services, carrying on a tradition that dates back to 1975.
Despite the rain sweeping across the island on Thursday, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station where he interacted with the officers on duty, shook hands, and traded baseball caps. He was seen smiling as he walked through the hall with his grandson Beau.
The president thought deeply about the current political atmosphere in the United States and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic viewpoints, and be mindful of the news they consume.
During a reflection on recent public opinion surveys indicating that many Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this could be due to declining viewership of traditional news sources and overly negative assessments on television.
He suggested that there is a reason for that, pointing out that when you watch television, you usually don’t see much positive news.
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges ahead. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed mild disapproval of some of his successor’s recent ideas.
