Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket, and called members of the armed services. This tradition has been a part of their family since 1975.
During a rainy day on the island, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station where he greeted the officers on duty and exchanged baseball caps with them. He also walked through the station with his grandson Beau, smiling as he did so.
The president spent a considerable amount of time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States. He encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic perspectives, and be mindful of the news they consume.
Mr. Biden commented on recent public opinion surveys that reveal many Americans are worried about the country’s direction. He believes this is due to fewer people turning to traditional news sources and negative assessments on television.
He suggested that the reason for that might be because when you watch TV, there is not a lot of positive news being shown.
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He suggested that Congress could push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed mild disapproval of some of his successor’s recent ideas.
