Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting on Wednesday with President-elect Donald J. Trump in a rare in-person meeting. This was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg arranged a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their strained relationship in recent years. Mr. Trump has criticized Meta for allegedly censoring him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, often attacking Mr. Zuckerberg publicly on social media and at public events.
Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday evening before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. The information comes from anonymous sources who were not allowed to talk about the meeting. During the meeting, Zuckerberg and Trump exchanged friendly greetings, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg made arrangements to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, according to sources.
A spokesperson from Meta stated that this is a crucial moment for the advancement of American innovation. They expressed gratitude on behalf of Mark for being invited to dine with President Trump and meeting with his team to discuss the upcoming administration.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out as he tries to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing any negative consequences from the new government. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservative politicians in Washington, with some in Congress accusing the company of censoring conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly demanded that Mr. Zuckerberg be imprisoned for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
