On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg had a rare in-person meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump as part of his efforts to build a positive relationship with him. This meeting was a rare occurrence and shows Zuckerberg’s attempt to connect with Trump.

According to three individuals familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg requested a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their history of tension over the last ten years. Mr. Trump has criticized Meta for allegedly censoring him and other conservatives on their social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and at public appearances.

On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who requested anonymity, revealed that the two men exchanged friendly greetings, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.

Following a meeting in the early afternoon, it was reported that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg intended to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening.

A representative from Meta stated that this is a crucial moment for American innovation. They expressed gratitude for Mark being invited to have dinner with President Trump and meeting with his team to discuss the upcoming administration.

However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out as he tries to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new government. Meta has been under scrutiny by conservatives in Washington for a while now, with some members of Congress wanting to limit what they view as suppression of conservative opinions. Additionally, Mr. Trump has publicly demanded for Mr. Zuckerberg to be imprisoned as a response to him allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
