Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday in an uncommon in-person meeting. This meeting was the most recent effort by the CEO of Meta to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
Three sources confirmed that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump, with Mr. Zuckerberg being the one to initiate it. Their relationship has been tense for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has accused Meta of unfairly restricting him and other conservatives on their social media platforms, leading to him publicly criticizing Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during his speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the next day. Sources, who requested anonymity, shared that the two men had a friendly conversation, with Mr. Zuckerberg complimenting Mr. Trump on his election victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, as reported by sources.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of this moment for American innovation. They stated that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out as the CEO tries to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new administration. Meta has faced criticism from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress wanting to limit what they perceive as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, Mr. Trump has personally suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
