Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday. This was a rare meeting where they met in person. Zuckerberg, who is the chief executive of Meta, was trying to build a good relationship with Trump.
Three individuals who are aware of the situation confirmed that the meeting was initiated by Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a tense relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unjustly restricted him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has criticized Mr. Zuckerberg publicly on social media and during speeches.
Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday evening before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. The sources, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that the two men had a cordial conversation, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.
Following a meeting that took place in the early afternoon, it was arranged for Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening.
A representative from Meta stated that this is a crucial moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark was appreciative of the invitation to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is making efforts to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new administration. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington for a while now, with some members of Congress accusing them of censoring conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has even demanded that Mr. Zuckerberg be arrested for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
