On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
According to three individuals familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg arranged a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their tense relationship in recent years. Mr. Trump has accused Meta of unfairly censoring him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg both online and at public events.
On Tuesday evening, Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. The meeting was reported by anonymous sources who were not allowed to talk about it. During the meeting, Zuckerberg and Trump exchanged friendly greetings, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.
Following a meeting in the early afternoon, it was arranged that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg would have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening.
A representative from Meta expressed the significance of the current period for American innovation. The representative mentioned that Mark was thankful for the chance to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is making efforts to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from potential backlash from the new government. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservative politicians in Washington for some time, with some members of Congress wanting to restrict what they perceive as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has even suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
