On Thursday morning, the president and first lady visited Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket and also made phone calls to members of the armed services, carrying on a tradition that they have been doing since 1975.

During heavy rains on Thursday, many people stayed indoors on the island. However, President Biden appeared happy as he visited the Nantucket fire station. He greeted the officers on duty, exchanged baseball caps with them, and showed his grandson Beau around the station.

The president spent some time thinking about the current political atmosphere in the United States and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid excessively pessimistic stories, and be mindful of the news they consume.

Mr. Biden commented on recent public opinion surveys that indicate many Americans are worried about the state of the country. He believes this is due to fewer people following traditional news sources and a negative tone on television.

"I believe there is a reason for that," he stated. "When you watch TV, you are often bombarded with negative news stories."

The president remained hopeful for Americans during uncertain times, but also acknowledged challenges that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face. He suggested that Congress may push Trump to adjust some of his plans, and also mentioned some concerns about Trump’s recent ideas.
