Reporting from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts as part of their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, and also spoke with members of the armed services. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.
During a rainy day on Thursday, many people stayed indoors on the island. However, President Biden seemed happy as he visited the Nantucket fire station. He greeted the officers on duty, exchanging baseball caps with them, and also walked through the hall with his grandson Beau.
The president spent some time contemplating the current political atmosphere in the United States and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic viewpoints, and be mindful of the news they consume.
Mr. Biden commented on recent surveys showing that many Americans are worried about the country’s direction. He thinks this is because fewer people are following traditional news sources and because TV news tends to have overly negative views.
"I believe there is a reason for that," he stated. "When you watch television, there is not a lot of positive news being shown."
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged challenges for President-elect Donald J. Trump in the future. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed some disapproval of his successor’s recent ideas.
