President Biden visited Nantucket for the last time during his presidency, making his usual visits and thanking people for progress towards peace in the Middle East. He also encouraged Americans to remain optimistic.

On Thursday morning, the president and first lady visited Massachusetts as part of their usual Thanksgiving routine. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket, and also made phone calls to members of the armed forces. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.

During a rainy day on the island, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station and interacted with the officers on duty, smiling and exchanging baseball caps with them. He also brought his grandson Beau along for the visit.

The president spent a considerable amount of time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging citizens to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic viewpoints, and be mindful of the news they consume.

After reviewing recent polls showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this may be due to a decline in viewership for traditional news sources and excessively negative portrayals on television.

He suggested that the reason for this may be the lack of positive news on television.

Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president expressed concerns about potential challenges for President-elect Donald J. Trump. He suggested that Congress might push for changes to some of Mr. Trump’s plans, and also offered some mild criticisms of his successor’s recent proposals.
