Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts as part of their usual Thanksgiving tradition. They handed out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, and also made phone calls to members of the armed services. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.
During a rainy day on the island, President Biden decided to visit the Nantucket fire station, where he greeted and interacted with the officers on duty, even exchanging baseball caps with them. He was seen smiling as he walked in with his grandson Beau.
The president spent a significant amount of time discussing the current political atmosphere in the United States, encouraging Americans to stay true to their values, avoid overly pessimistic stories, and be mindful of the news they consume.
After looking at recent public opinion polls that show most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden stated that he thinks this is because fewer people are tuning into traditional news sources and because TV news tends to be overly negative.
He suggested that the reason for that could be because when you watch TV, you are often shown more negative news rather than positive news.
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He foresaw the possibility of Congress pushing Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also mentioned some concerns about his successor’s recent ideas.
