Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.
On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited various locations in Massachusetts for Thanksgiving. They gave pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics on Nantucket, and also called members of the armed services. This is a tradition that the family has been doing since 1975.
During a rainy day on Thursday, when most people stayed indoors, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station. He greeted and exchanged baseball caps with the officers on duty, all while exploring the station with his grandson Beau by his side.
The president thought about the current political atmosphere in the US, advising Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic perspectives, and be mindful of the news they consume.
After looking at recent polls showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, Mr. Biden suggested that this may be due to fewer people relying on traditional news sources and the negative outlook portrayed in television news.
He mentioned that there might be a reason for that. When you watch TV, you tend to see more negative news than positive news.
Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges in the future. He suggested that Congress may push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed mild disapproval of some of his successor’s recent ideas.
