The president and the first lady visited Massachusetts on Thanksgiving morning, handing out pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket. They also called members of the armed services, continuing a family tradition they started in 1975.

During a rainy day on Thursday, when most people stayed indoors, President Biden visited the Nantucket fire station. He greeted and interacted with the officers on duty, even exchanging baseball caps with them. He was also accompanied by his grandson Beau during the visit.

The president thought deeply about the current political environment in the United States and encouraged Americans to stay true to their values, avoid pessimistic stories, and be mindful of the news they consume.

Mr. Biden mentioned that recent polls indicate that many Americans are worried about the country’s direction. He thinks this is because fewer people are relying on traditional news sources and because TV news tends to focus on negative aspects.

He mentioned that there is a reason for that. When you watch TV, you are not often exposed to positive news.

Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may encounter obstacles in the future. He anticipated that Congress may require Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed some disagreement with his successor’s recent proposals.
