Writing from Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Thursday morning, the president and the first lady visited Massachusetts for their usual Thanksgiving routine. They brought pumpkin pies to police officers, firefighters, and medics in Nantucket, and also reached out to members of the armed services. This has been a tradition for their family since 1975.

During a rainy day on Nantucket, President Biden visited the local fire station and interacted with the officers on duty. He smiled, shook hands, and exchanged baseball caps with them while accompanying his grandson Beau. Residents stayed indoors to avoid the bad weather.

The president took some time to think about the current political atmosphere in the United States, advising Americans to stay true to their values, avoid overly pessimistic stories, and carefully consider the news they consume.

When Mr. Biden considered recent public opinion polls showing that most Americans are worried about the country’s direction, he suggested that this might be due to declining viewership of traditional news outlets and overly negative reporting on television.

He mentioned that he believes there is a reason for that. He explained that when you watch television, there is often a lack of positive news being broadcasted.

Despite urging Americans to stay positive during uncertain times, the president acknowledged that President-elect Donald J. Trump may face challenges ahead. He suggested that Congress might push Mr. Trump to adjust some of his plans and also expressed some criticism of his successor’s recent ideas.
