Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
Three individuals familiar with the situation have confirmed that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. Mr. Zuckerberg initiated the meeting, despite a strained relationship between the two over the last ten years. Mr. Trump has been critical of Meta, accusing them of unfairly censoring him and other conservatives on their social media platforms. He has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during his speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. The information comes from anonymous sources who were not allowed to talk about the meeting. During the meeting, the two men exchanged pleasantries, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening, according to sources.
A Meta spokesperson expressed the significance of the current period for American innovation. They mentioned Mark’s appreciation for being invited to dinner with President Trump and for the chance to discuss the incoming administration with his team members.
Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new administration. Conservatives in Washington have often criticized Meta for censoring conservative opinions, with some members of Congress even calling for restrictions on the company. Former President Trump has also publicly accused Mr. Zuckerberg of trying to undermine him during the 2020 election, going as far as to suggest he should be imprisoned.
