Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare opportunity for them to meet in person. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s ongoing efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.

According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg initiated a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their strained relationship over the years. Mr. Trump has accused Meta of unfairly restricting him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, leading to public criticism of Mr. Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday night and met with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who requested anonymity, stated that the conversation between the two mainly consisted of greetings, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.

Following a meeting in the early afternoon, it was arranged for Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening.

A representative from Meta stated that this is a critical moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the invitation to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.

Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any negative consequences from the new government. Conservatives in Washington have criticized Meta for censoring conservative opinions, with some members of Congress even suggesting limits on the company. Former President Trump has accused Mr. Zuckerberg of conspiring against him during the 2020 election and has called for his imprisonment as a result.
