Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.

According to three sources familiar with the situation, the meeting was organized by Mark Zuckerberg, who has had a difficult relationship with Donald Trump for the last ten years. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Zuckerberg on social media and at campaign events.

On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. Sources who were not allowed to disclose information about the meeting mentioned that the conversation between the two men mainly consisted of Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.

Following their meeting in the early afternoon, it was arranged that Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg would have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening.

A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of this moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was thankful for the chance to dine with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team.

However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from potential backlash from the new government. Meta has been criticized by conservatives in Washington for allegedly censoring conservative opinions. Some members of Congress have even suggested imposing restrictions on the company. Additionally, former President Trump has accused Mr. Zuckerberg of plotting against him during the 2020 election and has called for his imprisonment as retaliation.
