Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, marking a rare in-person meeting between the two. This meeting is part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
According to three sources, a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump, with Mr. Zuckerberg initiating the discussion. The two men have had a tense relationship for the past ten years, with Mr. Trump accusing Meta of unfairly limiting him and other conservatives on its social media platforms. Mr. Trump has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during his speeches.
Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday evening and met with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. The details were shared by anonymous sources who were not permitted to disclose the meeting. During their interaction, Zuckerberg praised Trump for his victory in the presidential election.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg made plans to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, according to sources.
A Meta spokesperson expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was thankful for being invited to have dinner with President Trump and for the chance to discuss the incoming administration with his team members.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out to others as he tries to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing consequences from the new government. Meta has often been criticized by conservatives in Washington, with some members of Congress wanting to limit what they view as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has even suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
