On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a positive relationship with Trump.
Three individuals familiar with the situation have verified that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a difficult relationship with Mr. Trump for the past ten years. Mr. Trump has repeatedly accused Meta of unfairly limiting his and other conservatives’ presence on their social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during public appearances.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the next day. According to anonymous sources, the meeting was mostly friendly, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential win. The sources were not authorized to discuss the meeting.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that evening, according to sources.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was thankful for the chance to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.
Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect his company Meta, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing consequences from the new administration. Meta has faced criticism from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress accusing them of censoring conservative opinions. Former President Trump even called for Mr. Zuckerberg to be imprisoned for allegedly scheming against him in the 2020 election.
