On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg had a rare in-person meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a positive relationship with Mr. Trump.
Three individuals familiar with the situation confirmed that a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Zuckerberg, despite the strained relationship he has had with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has criticized Meta for allegedly censoring him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly attacked Mr. Zuckerberg both on social media and during his speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his Mar-a-Lago hotel and club the following day. According to sources who requested anonymity, the conversation between the two men was mostly friendly, with Mr. Zuckerberg offering his congratulations to Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that evening, according to sources.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed that they believe this is a crucial moment for the advancement of American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from potential criticism from the new administration. Meta has often been criticized by conservatives in Washington for allegedly censoring conservative views. Some members of Congress have even suggested limiting Meta’s power. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly accused Mr. Zuckerberg of trying to undermine him during the 2020 election and called for his imprisonment.
