Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, a meeting was arranged between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. Mr. Zuckerberg, who has had a difficult relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years, reached out to initiate the meeting. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unjustly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during public speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida, before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the next day. Sources who wished to remain anonymous reported that the two men had a friendly interaction, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his election victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel that same evening, according to sources.
A Meta spokesperson stated that this is a crucial moment for the advancement of American innovation. They mentioned that Mark was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing consequences from the new administration. Meta has been criticized by conservatives in Washington for censoring conservative viewpoints. Some members of Congress want to limit Meta’s power in this regard. Additionally, former President Trump has accused Mr. Zuckerberg of trying to undermine him during the 2020 election and has even suggested that he should be imprisoned.
