Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare opportunity for them to meet in person. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Trump.
According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg arranged a meeting with Mr. Trump, despite their strained relationship in the past ten years. Mr. Trump has accused Meta of unfairly limiting him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, criticizing Mr. Zuckerberg publicly on social media and during public speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who asked to remain anonymous, shared that the meeting was mostly cordial, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg made arrangements to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, according to sources.
A spokesperson from Meta expressed the significance of the current moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with his team.
However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out to the incoming administration in an effort to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing any negative consequences. Meta has been a frequent target of criticism from conservatives in Washington, with some members of Congress accusing the company of censoring conservative opinions. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly demanded for Mr. Zuckerberg to be imprisoned as a form of retribution for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
