Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.
Three individuals familiar with the situation have verified that a meeting took place, which was proposed by Mr. Zuckerberg. He has had a tense relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms. He has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg on social media and during public speeches.
On Tuesday evening, Mr. Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida before meeting with Mr. Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who requested anonymity, shared that the meeting consisted mostly of friendly conversation, with Mr. Zuckerberg congratulating Mr. Trump on his presidential victory.
Following a meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, according to sources.
A representative from Meta expressed that it is a significant moment for American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was thankful for being invited to have dinner with President Trump and for the chance to discuss the upcoming administration with members of his team.
As the CEO, Mr. Zuckerberg is trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing any negative consequences from the new administration. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress accusing the company of censoring conservative opinions. Former President Trump has even publicly called for Mr. Zuckerberg to be imprisoned for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
