On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump in a rare in-person meeting. This meeting was part of Zuckerberg’s efforts to build a positive relationship with Trump.

According to three sources familiar with the situation, a meeting took place between Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Trump. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Zuckerberg, despite their strained relationship over the last ten years. Mr. Trump has repeatedly accused Meta of unfairly limiting him and other conservatives on their social media platforms, and has publicly criticized Mr. Zuckerberg both online and during his public appearances.

Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday evening before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, on Wednesday. The sources, who requested anonymity, stated that the meeting was mainly filled with friendly conversation, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.

Following their meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg arranged to have dinner together at Mr. Trump’s hotel later that same evening, according to sources.

A spokesperson from Meta expressed that this is a crucial moment for the advancement of American innovation. They mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg was appreciative of the chance to have dinner with President Trump and discuss the upcoming administration with members of his team.

However, Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out to the incoming administration while trying to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from any possible negative consequences. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington for some time, with some members of Congress wanting to limit what they view as censorship of conservative opinions. Additionally, Mr. Trump has publicly suggested that Mr. Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.
