Mark Zuckerberg had a meeting with President-elect Donald J. Trump on Wednesday, which was a rare opportunity for them to meet in person. This meeting was the Meta CEO’s latest effort to build a good relationship with Mr. Trump.

According to three sources familiar with the situation, Mr. Zuckerberg requested the meeting, despite his tense relationship with Mr. Trump for the last ten years. Mr. Trump has consistently claimed that Meta has unfairly limited him and other conservatives on its social media platforms, and has criticized Mr. Zuckerberg publicly on social media and at public events.

Mark Zuckerberg arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday night before meeting with Donald Trump at his hotel and club, Mar-a-Lago, the following day. Sources, who requested anonymity, shared that the conversation between the two men was mainly friendly, with Zuckerberg congratulating Trump on his presidential victory.

Following a meeting in the early afternoon, Mr. Trump and Mr. Zuckerberg decided to have dinner at Mr. Trump’s hotel later in the evening, according to sources familiar with the situation.

A representative from Meta stated that it is a crucial moment for the advancement of American innovation. They mentioned that Mark was thankful for the chance to have dinner with President Trump and to discuss the upcoming administration with his team members.

Mr. Zuckerberg is reaching out to the incoming administration as he tries to protect Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from facing any backlash. Meta has been under scrutiny from conservatives in Washington, with some in Congress accusing the company of censoring conservative perspectives. Additionally, former President Trump has publicly demanded that Mr. Zuckerberg be imprisoned for allegedly working against him during the 2020 election.
